main road & side road

Main road & side road

In residential areas, the intersections that have no traffic lights are divided into main roads and side roads.

If you don’t face any stop or give way signs and lines, it means you are on the main road.

The other side of the intersection that has stop and give way lines, is the side road.

So if you are on the main road and you are:

a. turning left,

b. going straight,

or c. turning right,

you don’t need to worry about cars on the side road. You just need to confidently finish your turn or keep going straight.

It’s always good to scan the side road at the intersections, but we don’t slow down TOO much to do that.

If the intersection is very narrow or because of some buildings or trees, you can't see the side road clearly, you need to slow down and proceed with caution. Because in case someone missed the stop sign, at least you can stop and avoid an accident.

If you are on the main road, you only need to worry about other cars on the main road, IF they are going straight from the opposite side of the road.

This is a very important give way rule:

'Anytime you are turning right, you need to give way to cars going straight from the opposite side of the road.'

You also need to worry about other cars on the main road, IF they are turning left to the same road that you are turning.

This is another very important give way rule:

'Anytime two cars from the opposite side of the road are turning to the same road, the car that is closer to the corner (or is turning left), should go first."
